CAMDEN ON GAULEY MEDICAL CENTER, INC.
JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: Optical Technician
  • Employee will work in a manner consistent with Camden on Gauley Medical Center’s mission, goals and standards of conduct and care. This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties you will be required to perform.   • This position requires compliance with Camden Family Health’s written standards, including its Compliance Program, Code of Ethics and policies and procedures. Such compliance will be an element considered as part of your regular performance evaluation. Failure to comply with Camden Family Health’s Written Standards will be met by the enforcement of disciplinary action, up to and including possible termination, in accordance with Camden Family Health’s Compliance Program Policies and Procedures.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
  • Be caring, compassionate and helpful to patients.
  • Observe all policies, rules and regulations of Camden On Gauley Medical Center, Inc.
  • Complete and accurate entering of all patient information.
  • Run vision tests as requested by the doctor.
  • Run patient acuity testing, color blind testing, depth perception testing, etc.
  • Assist patients to exam chair.
  • Ensure procedures have been preauthorized or are covered by insurance as documented by the optical billing clerk before procedure is performed.
  • Assist patients with trial contacts.
  • Ensure that all record requests have been completed and signed if patients are needing records sent to outside facilities.
  • Dilate patient’s eyes at doctor’s request.
  • Answer and accurately transfer telephone calls to the appropriate staff.
  • Ensuring that all chart information is scanned into chart prior to patient’s appointment when possible.
  • Responsible for maintaining exam areas and patient areas throughout the day.
  • Address and work all tasks sent to optical assistant.
  • Adjust and repair glasses when needed.
  • Check in of glasses and contacts and call to let patients know when they are ready for pickup.
  • Educating first time contact patients on how to insert and care for contact lenses.
  • Assist patients with frame selection.
  • Provide coverage at other offices when needed or when optical provider is out of the office.
  • Travel to other clinics when necessary
  • Provide coverage for optical receptionist when on breaks or in their absence.
  • Prepare orders on a weekly basis for all needed supplies and submit to clinical coordinator.
  • Help coordinate communication with various community agencies
  • Communicate with pharmacies, multidisciplinary departments within health center, and ophthalmology surgery centers
  • All other duties assigned
  • All Camden Family Health staff will follow all Corporate Compliance policies and participate in all required trainings.
  • Participates as a member of the patient Care Team by: using the CFH Care Team Communication Process for receiving, sending and documenting all patient related information and tasks with other Care Team members
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Normal physical mobility, which includes moving from place to place in all areas of the center, as well as some areas outside the center structure.
  • Employee must demonstrate normal to high physical agility, which includes ability to maneuver body while in place and to assist other persons to do so. Includes standing, sitting, stooping, bending, squatting, reaching, seeing, carrying, hearing, talking, thinking, and learning regarding the job, as well as required by the State Boards for continued licenses.
  • Normal to high physical strength to handle less than 20-pound objects and heavier objects in emergency situations.
  • Normal dexterity of hands and fingers.
  • Normal coordination, including eye-hand, hand-foot.
  • Normal endurance.
  • Normal concentration/intensity, which could include prolonged mental effort with limited possibility of break and could include emergency situations.
  • Above average memory.
  • Normal complexity of decision making and must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Normal ability to organize workload to determine priority of duties as related to the specific job title. Includes good communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to work on your own when necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Normal accessibility of all work sites required for the specific position.
  • Normal to high exposure to weather, temperature, cramped spaces, usual chemicals, fumes, and dust.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education and Training: High School Graduate/GED. On-the-job training.
  • Experience in clinical settings is beneficial, though not required.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS:
Work under the direction of the Director of Nursing.

  • The employee must possess a high degree of accuracy for the performance of job-related tasks and functions. Since errors can lead to patient care interruptions, costly consequences, and potential injury to self and others, the Medical Center reserves the right to determine, at its discretion, the severity and impact of an employee error. Disciplinary procedures may be imposed in accordance with the Employee Personnel Policy.

  • Must be thoughtful of others, gentle, courteous, patient, neat, well groomed, healthy, tactful, friendly, of above average intelligence and with a good memory. Must have the ability to organize his/her time.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and tactfully with others within the clinic and especially with the public.
  • Must be of good moral character and have a pleasing personality.
HOURS PER DAY OR WEEK:
  • Full-Time employee: 38-40 hours per week, with occasional overtime.
  • Part-Time employee: 10 to 29 hours per week
